Johnson Controls Ltd

Area Projects Manager – IBM Account

Jul 07 to Aug 08

This position was to head up the Northern area projects team for the IBM account, covering 12 sites from Milton Keynes up to and including Scotland with the home site being Warwick, with a team of 12. I turned the team round and obtained a state holder report pass each month with the aid of introducing better communication, team work, mentoring and quality. Time was split between staff management, project management and building stakeholder / FM relationships across the sites, while ensuring that projects were run on time and on budget. Software tools used to manage the projects included MS Project, Excel and Mind Manager.

  • Responsible to maintaining the multi-million pound asset plan for the area and ensuring that key elements are raised under capital expenditure requests to be discussed with the client for the release of money for larger projects.

  • Control regularly 40 projects at a time across the team with varying complexities & auditing project finances. Project budget values varied from £5k to £3m for the larger complex project.

  • The Warwick site is 34 acres in size, with 58k ft2 of computer suites & 103k ft2 of office space

  • Larger projectors included converting offices into machine rooms(PDU’s, static switches, new layouts, UPS, false floors, cabling, fire exits, air conditioning & biometric security), roof repairs, building & machine room security access

  • Other projects involved a variety of subjects from Asbestos disposal; DDA access; environmental awareness (air flow analysis, machine room lighting, water utilisation & landscaping) through to HV environments. While also incorporating office relocations and transition to the IBM environment.

  • Carry out project audits and implement new policies and procedures while sense checking third parties.

  • Identify project staging and ensure that these are both confirmed with the client & achieved.

  • Address the waste issue as regards to hazard waste, wet and dry waste and implement new building waste management and reporting. Arrange for confidential waste to be shredded onsite prior to removal.

  • Monitor accidents / near misses and carry out investigations, including disciplines where required. Ensure that relevant IBM, Johnson Controls and RIDOR are informed where necessary. Then investigate and carry out improvements to systems / policies / training.

  • Carry out regular staff meetings and toolbox talks to ensure that H&S, security and fire awareness is everyone’s responsibility and that the relevant policies are adhered to including the asbestos register.

  • Work with the IBM Securities team on building improvements across the Northern estate

  • Staff motivation, development & appraisals and breakdown the barriers between the departmental teams

  • Negotiate & work closely with all levels of management both for the client and internal together with vendors and deal with conflict/resolution issues including on behalf of the client.

  • Work with developers on software implementations for both security & client project management.

Phoenix IT Services PLC

Technical Project Manager

Apr 04 to Jul 07

This position was managing IMAC team of 28 and CPS / LogicaCMG major projects and making a small problem group into a successful, profitable department. While this was a management environment, it still required hands on technical knowledge, in particular as regards to the comms side and rollouts, while developing Ghost image deployment solution.

  • Project manage the Crown Prosecution Service major moves. As most of these were required to be completed outside working hours, this often incurred working weekends and anti-social hours with various teams around the country. Often up to 30 projects at a time across the 544 site estate.

  • Technical refresh projects: OS upgrade deployment, laptop (450) & workstation (3,500), switch & comms and servers (450)

  • Deployment projects: Blackberry devices, Packeteers, securID/Guardian Angel, new printers & MFDs.

  • Rapid disaster recovery, covering theft of equipment, terrorist incidents and flooding events

  • During office moves, I got involved from the initial concept/brief, through to the PID, then considering the logistical requirements, communication preparation, quotes, tendering and working instructions to the actual hands on management of the moves.  While also liaising with the third party suppliers, electricians, furniture providers and removal companies.

  • Attend project meetings and business reviews and produce weekly management reports including asbestos contamination and other H&S issues.

  • Mentor, manage and introduce new policies to cover the training of engineers on first aid and manual handling in particular as on most site relocations. Also carry out staff appraisals and HR related issues.

  • Carry out accident / project reviews and investigations to introduce improvements including relevant training and new policies / procedures. Sometimes these had to be negotiated with senior management to ensure that they were implemented.

  • Introduction of best practices and training for engineers, office staff and clients.

  • Further projects I’ve been Involved with:

    • Lombard Finance – working in partnership as they technical advisor for their clients
